CANHR to Testify at Legislative Hearings This Week Touting a Ten-Point Plan to Reform California Nursing Homes

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Today CANHR released a Ten-Point Reform Plan that responds to the nightmarish conditions California nursing home residents have faced throughout the pandemic and for years before the coronavirus arrived.

The sweeping plan addresses longstanding failings that the pandemic has exposed for all to see, starting with the need to give top priority to helping people stay out of nursing homes. It also addresses living conditions, safe staffing, emergency preparedness, nursing home slumlords, bad actors, self-dealing schemes, justice for elder abuse victims and independence from the nursing home industry.

On Tuesday, June 9, Pat McGinnis, CANHR’s Executive Director, will testify at a joint oversight hearing by the Assembly Health and the Aging and Long-Term Care Committees on the COVID-19 outbreak in nursing homes and the State’s response. The 9 am hearing will be streamed from the California State Assembly website (please note that the hearing was moved and the website hasn’t been updated). The public may comment at the end of the hearing by calling this number: (877) 692-8957, Access Code: 2426237.

On Wednesday, June 10, Tony Chicotel, CANHR’s Staff Attorney, will testify at a Senate Special Committee on Pandemic Emergency Response hearing on skilled nursing facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 9 am hearing will be streamed from the California State Senate website. The public may comment at the end of the hearing via a call-in number provided during the hearing.

This is a critical opportunity for residents, families, and advocates to tell our lawmakers what they can do to help ease the suffering experienced in nursing homes.
We strongly encourage you to watch or listen to the hearing and share your story or express support for reform during the public comment period.
